 2016 RACING SEASON SUMMARY

   Catapult got the
2016 Racing Programme underway in fine style at Rutland Sailing Club April 16th-17th, alongside the Squibs Inland Championship, in three back-to-back races on Saturday and Sunday. To say the least conditions varied, from wintry whitecaps at times on Saturday and sunny shifting north-westerlies on Sunday.

New members getting to grips with the boat joined a good racing turnout. Very close racing saw a tight contest at the top, with Gareth Ede triumphing narrowly over Alex Montgomery, and the next five places covered by a three point spread.

For the second event of the
2016 Sailing Programme Catapult was back to a favourite venue at Bassenthwaite for the Spring Bank Holiday April 30th-May 2nd, in their lovely Lake District setting. A big turnout, including new members, travelled through snow and hail to the Lake District, with Saturday's racing amongst snow-covered hills, relieved by sunshine.

Bass delivered its typical unpredictability, with Sunday racing blown away, and 45mph gusts at dawn on Monday, easing enough for a great final race, mixing moderate SW breezes with some fierce gusts.

Gareth Ede was the clear winner (although the fleet and individual battles stayed close) to tighten his grip on the Yellow Pennant on the 2016 TT Leaderboard

Catapult returned to Carsington on June 4th-5th, for the onset of summer in bright sunshine, successfully joining the club racing on Saturday and Sunday, both giving excellent courses. Light northerlies gave shifting and fluctuating conditions, but with enough breeze for good if taxing racing. Stuart Ede showed mastery of the light conditions, working to the front in each race and scoring four firsts.

The Ede family shared the top two places in almost every race, and Gareth tightened his firm grip at the top of the
Leaderboard, now being able to count first places throughout. (Results)

On handicap, Justin Evans was a clear winner, but Alastair Forrest with a generous age allowance (both boat and helm) keeps the Red Pennant on the
Handicap Leaderboard

2016 SAILING PROGRAMME:  FINAL EVENTS FOR 2016:  The season wrapped up again at Grafham, joining the Cat Open fleets (and Catapult had the third biggest fleet turnout, after the Sprint 15s and A Class.) The trapezoid courses suiting Catapult, and light-moderate NE breezes (with some bursts of bright sunshine) made it a great final event. Alex Montgomery scored two wins on Saturday but had to leave for work comittments, and Gareth Ede consolidated the event win ahead of John Terry.(Report and pictures)  (more Grafham photos)

Yorkshire Dales SC hosted the penultimate TT October 8th-9th, on Grimworth Reservoir, high on the Yorkshire moors. Varying NE breezes gave a good fleet a bracing workout, with Gareth Ede pushed by John Terry (photo below) and George Evans. An extra bonus was Paul Hargreaves as an expert photographer on shore, getting shots of individual herlms and racing action. (Report and pictures)

Chris Phillips' boat speed made him the Handicap winner in every race, but Alastair Forrest with a generous age allowance (both boat and helm) clung on to the Red Pennant on the Handicap Leaderboard to win the Handicap trophy for 2017
